PRESENTING DEGREE WORK

Degree exhibition, Umeå institute of design. 9/6-16/7 2008.

Welcome! During the last couple of weeks the degree work have taken almost all of my time and I’m sorry for ”the lack of update” on this page.

Finally I’m presenting the result of a 10-week study in how design and sustainability could be combined in future projects. For more information about other works, don’t hesitate to download my portfolio in the link to the left.

Please enjoy!

Increased customer participation when shopping with food, towards a more sustainable society. A collaboration between UID student Martin Hanberger and Konsum Nord.

This degree work handles Sustainable communication system for shopping food, focusing on the physical interaction.

Background
It’s complicated to be a "good" costumer in a sustainable perspective. Necessary information to do the “right” choices, aren’t displayed on the packaging or at signs in stores. There is a great complexity of factors witch have an impact for the total affect on the environmental and society of a certain item. An example of these factors could be production, worker’s condition, transportation, warehouse storage, destruction, recycling or reuse. Costumers are getting aware of these factors but the connection and relation between this factors are to complex to handle, especially in the shopping situation. Costumers want this information and the information has to be simplified and certified in a reliable system.

How can you satisfy the need of tomorrows costumer, for identifying different items total effect on the society and our global environmental?

Result
Increased consciousness among consumers regarding climate change sets a demand for a deeper insight in the production and handling of groceries. By studying shopping patterns, information needs, and psychological aspects, a concept for a new information system and product to meet this demand was developed.

The result presents a handheld product used to choose and compare items (sustainabilty factors) both from home and in store, where you also receive a navigation route to your groceries.
